In certain cases, our ophthalmologists cannot perform LASIK, for example if the cornea is too thin. For such patients, a TransPRK is a very good alternative, because with this method the cornea is not re-modulated in deeper layers, but the laser is removed on the surface.
After the healing process has been completed, the results of the TransPRK treatment are absolutely comparable with other methods.
As one of very few specialist centers in Germany, we implement the innovative No Touch TransPRK with SmartSurf ACE. This completely blade-free laser treatment is also known as TransPRK (Transepithelial Photorefractive Keratectomy) and represents a further development of the common surface treatment PRK. Thanks to the use of an excimer laser from the German company Schwind, no corneal incision is necessary with the TransPRK.
In contrast to PRK, the TransPRK no longer uses a mechanical instrument, but the top corneal layer, the epithelium, is removed using the laser.
The advantages of this state-of-the-art procedure are obvious: It is particularly gentle and low-risk because the wound area is smaller and smoother. A faster healing process enables a quick return to everyday life.
Another positive thing is that the entire procedure can be carried out in just one treatment step. The fact that the removal of the epithelium and the actual correction of the ametropia are performed with the laser significantly reduces the treatment time.
